Tradition and Command of Corn Corn as we know it, has a unique quality which allows for its multiple uses. Although, many people see corn as just a dietary staple, it has other uses such as, biofuels, sweeteners, and other products. In fact, about 25% of the items in a grocery store contain corn in some form. However, most of the corn produced goes to feeding animals, resulting in the need for this commodity for our protein intake. Not everyone takes into account the importance of corn or the history behind it. Corn was originally cultivated by the indigenous tribes that populated the New World. This crop harvested best in climates like Mexico, Central America, and upper South America. For this reason, corn was a fundamental crop for these tribes. Many of their foods …show more content…
These recipes were passed down generation to generation as you can see in the typical foods of the countries in this region. For instance, in Mexico and El Salvador, tortillas, which are made of corn flour, are mainstay; the majority of people eat tortillas with every meal. Even their drinks had corn in them, a common one is Atole. Cultivating corn was such a blessing to them, for this reason farms were passed down from father to son and it continues to be that way for some, as a tradition. Corn was introduced to the Europeans during the age of exploration. Being that corn required warmth to be able to grow many European countries adopted it as a summer crop.
