Cultural Reflection Cultural competency among health educators can be defined as “requires that organizations have set values and principles, and demonstrate behaviors, attitudes, policies, and structures that enable them to work effective cross-culturally” (Goode). Cultural competence is a developmental process that evolves over an extended period (Goode). It is highly important to know about cultural competency. It is a key factor for health educators to be effective with students from different cultures. Knowing and understanding that each student is unique and come from different backgrounds and cultures. I feel I fell on this continuum, because I tend to treat all students as equal. I thought as an educator you had to make sure you treated everyone the same. I do have some knowledge of working with students from different cultures since I have been working with students for over 10 years. I do feel I have never been to a training that emphasizes with cultural competency. I feel the school district I work for should have trainings on it and how effective it can be. I do feel I need to gain more knowledge on cultural competency. I have worked with students of all races and different culture backgrounds. This world is a mixture of all race and cultural backgrounds. The children’s defense fund predicts that early in the first decade following the year 2000, there will be 5.5 million more Latino children, 2.6 million more African American children, 1.5 million more children of other races and 6.2 million fewer white, non-latino children in the United States (Georgetown.edu).
