Differences such as gestures, eye contact, personal space and punctuality, will determine whether a healthcare provider will make a personal connection with the patient and thereby gain their trust. Healthcare providers need to remember that friendly or encouraging hand gestures such as a “thumbs up” or “ok” gesture can have a negative meaning in other cultures and by using one of these gestures could be considered offensive. The same holds true for making eye contact and knowing when to respect another’s personal space. Healthcare providers are taught the importance of making eye contact in an effort to ensure that the patient understands what is being said to them.
