Based on your opinions on what we’ve learned in this section, answer Cullen Murphy’s question: “Are We Rome?”

I would agree with Cullen Murphy’s view of the state of the United States government. As the United States capital city Washington was once the center of the world quite like Rome was once the center of its world. There are arguments that Washington still is the as you would say capital of the world. However, I would disagree with that as the United States is no longer the sole super power of the world. The United States has been joined at the top by countries like Russia, China, and Great Britain.

Some things have changed for the United States when it comes to military power quite like the Roman state faced. The United States at

In his article “Why Has America Stopped Winning Wars,” Dominic Tierney incorrectly asserts that the United States is in a period of unwinnable wars and that, as such, the United States should plan for battlefield failure and “losing the right way. ”1 He uses multiple fallacies to build his argument, including appeals to emotion, appeals to questionable authority, explaining by naming, and searching for a perfect solution. This leads to the conclusion that the US position as a superpower is a weakness in terms of military engagement. This shortsighted position fails to encompass a holistic view that military engagements do not have to rise to the level of total victory to contribute to overall strategy.…

Despite these confusing and contradictory ways, the United States emerged as the most powerful economic power globally and changed its foreign policy dramatically. It took the lead in funding for the United Nations and various constitutional values shaped current United States foreign policy, where governments with democracy are often favored. However, the United States will continue to have conflicts with the international politicians that do not govern the same…

With so many lives lost the amount of people to help protect the country fell greatly. This lack of people make it even easier for the already brutally superior Huns to overthrow the “almighty” Rome. If Rome had not been affected by such strong disasters and disease more soldiers would have been able to contribute to fighting the Huns. Rome could have lasted for a longer period of time if not for the political and economic corruption.…

In “The Fall of Rome — an author discussion,” authors Bryan Ward-Perkins and Peter Heather present and confer their stances related to the fall of Rome. Though the two historians disagreed on a few concepts, they both definitely agreed that the fall of Rome was caused by a violent struggle through several “series of unfortunate events.” Contrary to other historians, like Walter Goffart, Ward-Perkins and Heather agreed that each time the Romans ceded land to foreign adversaries, their internal state of affairs were disrupted. For 70 years, Heather states, the Romans “struggled to survive” amid their “loss of vital, agricultural, tax base,” and their difficulty to maintain their military manpower. For example, Alexander Severus, who was Emperor from 222-235, was murdered by his own troops when he refused to increase their pay.…

The powers of the President are listed in Article two, Section two of the Constitution and unlike the powers granted to Congress, the list of Presidential powers are short and vague. Before the original thirteen states declared independence from Britain, they were colonies ruled over by King George III. Although the colonists were taxed, they had no one to represent their needs in British parliament. This taxation without representation was a key factor in provoking the American Revolution, in which the newly formed union declared independence from Britain and the tyranny of the king. In order to prevent one person from having most of the power the framers of the Constitution gave legislative powers to Congress because the members were elected by the people but the framers recognized a need for quick, decisive action that Congress could not provide. “The historian Jack N. Rakove has…

The Economics of American Naval Dominance Part I To say that the U.S. Navy doesn’t influence the job market would be an understatement. Production of ships, planes, and other military equipment helps create domestic jobs and strengthens the U.S. Navy’s global presence. “Maintaining a strong industrial base supporting the seagoing elements of the U.S. Merchant Marine and U.S. Navy includes having the trained and experienced manpower necessary to crew the vessels comprising the commercial merchant fleet and the skilled shipyard workers needed to build and repair both Navy and commercial ships” (America’s Maritime Industry). There are 93 shipyards in the United States; of those 93, 11 are military and the rest are privately ran (Seidman).…

Starting from thirteen colonies, the United States has spread its influence from coast to coast in order to build a “perfect union.” This influence has since spread across the oceans; the United States has become a powerhouse similar to Athens. Instead of trying to drain others of resources, the US has acted like an all-knowing nation that has the power to interfere in international relations. In 20th century, this positively affected the United States and brought the country together in war. It is hard to argue that the country was prosperous during this time.…
