Being a Non-American citizen and living here for the past few years of college gives me ability to accurately judge the United States from both internal and external view. When looking from an external and internal view it is clear that the United States of America is the superpower of the world. Being the superpower I believe that there are roles that the U.S. should take. However, the role that I think the U.S. should acquire is not the role they have actually taken on in the current day.
I think that the United States is playing two roles in the world today. From a foreigners view I see the U.S. as being a “Schoolyard” bully. You may ask why a bully? Well first, America relies on their proficiency …show more content…
I think that it has the fear of being weak or the fear of lacking fundamental elements of power. Thus, because of the existence of this fear, America must prove to the world but more importantly to themselves that they are indeed powerful, that they are not weak.
Now, from living in the United States for the past two and half years, I also have another perception of the role that the United States is playing in the world today. I think that rather than being a bully, they are actually playing the role of “policeman of the world.” Because, the U.S. has so much power, I believe it feels that it must do something with it, hence it has carried out all the actions mentioned in the paragraph above.
However, unlike policemen, the United States does not react to a crime that has been commit around the world. Instead, America uses presumptive actions to try and eliminate any threat before it happens and this is where the perception of being a bully arises. So overall, I think that the United States is playing a combination of the two roles, both a bully and a policeman. From a foreigner’s view is looks more like bullying than anything else especially based on their interactions on the international …show more content…
Hence, the U.S. currently has some troops in Europe, Asia and the Gulf. Secondly, the U.S. must use it power to aid in areas other than violence, and it can indeed do so by helping to preserve an open international economy. I think that this type of economic system than one becomes closed and protectionist. Thirdly, with all its wealth, the U.S. should be major supporters for international institutions like the United Nations. By doing so, it allows countries to come together to accomplish common goals. Finally, since basically the entire world is a little afraid of the U.S. due to its military firepower, it can act as the peacemaker. However, this does not mean to take the current presumptive actions that the U.S. is doing at the moment in Afghanistan as the film “Why we fight” mentions. If America can accomplish the four things mentioned above, I think that it can effectively carry out the role of being the older sibling or parent of the countries of the world.
Overall, I know that it is very difficult to complete everything correctly and to please everyone around the world while doing so. But I think that if, the U.S. takes on the role I think they should take, then they will come very close to pleasing everyone while completing many tasks. Adopting such a role will definitely benefit America and the entire world around
