The invasion was an attempt to overthrow the communist leader Fidel Castro. It took place on the day April 17, 1961 and lasted until April 19, 1961. It was not the first time that America had tried to get rid of Fidel Castro, nor would it be the last. There would end up being 638 attempts to kill Fidel Castro (newsela.com). While Castro was leader hundreds of thousands of Cubans fled the country. President Kennedy had the idea to send the Cuban exiles back to Cuba armed to try to overthrow the government. His full name was Fidel Alejandro Castro Ruz. He was born on August 13, 1926. He rose to power in the year of 1959. He was fairly new to his job when the crisis occurred. Cuba soon became dependent on the Soviet Union for military and economic aid once he was leader. Fidel did a lot of good and a lot of bad for his people.
