In his senior year of college, Germany invaded Poland and World War II begun. Jack and his eldest brother Joe both joined the navy. Jack was a lieutenant for the South Pacific in the Solomon Islands in a patrol torpedo boat as a commander. His boat blew up when it came in contact with a Japanese warship, but luckily he saved himself and a fellow crew member, Patrick McMahon. For his bravery and honor he was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps Medal. The war came to an end and Kennedy wanted to decide what his profession was to be, and he desired to be a writer or a teacher. His father persuaded him to run for Congress in Massachusetts' eleventh congressional district, and which he won in 1946. An overall description of what happened was the previous president, Dwight Eisenhower, decided to have the CIA train and arm Cuban exiles or La Brigada to invade the island of communist influenced Cuba. When Jack became president, the plan was approved with a couple of his own changes. On April 17, 1961 1,400 Cuban exiles invaded the southern coast of Cuba called the Bay of Pigs. Unfortunately, the invasion was a failure. The boats full of exiles were aground on coral reefs, and to hide US involvement Kennedy cancelled the air support and Fidel Castro’s forces killed or captured all most all the exiles.
