A possible solution to the long response times and poor equipment is a collaboration with neighboring city and county police forces. More officers on patrol would not only shorten response times but increase the presence and visibility of police in the community. Police administration should consult with other administrative officials who have found success in urban areas and implement newfound strategies. There exists a lack of trust not only with the police department but also elected officials. Justice cannot be achieved if the city of Detroit is under the control of corrupted officials. The tenure of former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his charges of embezzlement and racketeering hurt the city’s reputation the relationship with the citizens. In lieu of the corruption in the city and to build trust between city officials and citizens, wages of the city council members could be lowered. Kilpatrick’s advisors included personal friends and family members. City officials should make a great effort in eliminating the nepotism in these high-power positions. Term limits of city officials should be implemented and enforced to eliminate those who abuse the power. Finally, the relationship between police officials and citizens must be strengthened.
