Counselling Reflective Analysis

I believe that I still need a lot of practice before I could start counselling. As doing this role play I found myself remembering quite a lot of the things we are supposed to do while counselling. For example give attending behavior, paraphrasing, useing open and closed questions and more. As I used these counselling guidelines I know that I could improve on the things I’ve mentioned even though I did use these techniques and skills I know I did not use them properly as I learnt from myself as well as the feedback I got from my observer which I will expand on in my next paragraph.

Secondly for open and close questions I find myself saying one more than the other, where in my case I would ask more closed than open questions. Although as I was asking many closed questions I did notice that I could have change some of them to open questions. For example, a closed question I had asked was “Do you find the work hard to understand?” which going over my feedback I could hav switched it to an open question which I changed could have changed it to “What do you find hard understanding in the work you get?” as if I have done this would help me get more information on my client without having to ask many closed questions. To add on although I did have some flaws I do think I did well on some of the counselling skills such as using body language, facial expressions and gestures where I remembered SOLER and I faced my client squarely to show I am ready to listen, had an open posture to not …show more content…
My observer noticed the awkwardness and how there was silence and I realized one of the main reasons for those awkward silences was because my main focus was to try and remember word for word what our client has said rather than genuinely listening to what the client had to say. Additionally, I believe that in order to become a “good” counsellor it should come in a natural way like how one of Roger’s guide to counselling is genuineness and how I shouldn’t be thinking of what comes next like “Should I say an open or closed question next?” or “Did I paraphrase?” or “Am I positioned correctly to be facing my client?” I believe all these things should be a natural thing you do when you are a counsellor and your main focus should be to help your client and advise

Since I was first accepted into the graduate clinical mental health counseling program, I highly anticipated my first experience of actual counseling. I never expected the difficulties I would face upon my first encounter counseling a client. With my client unaware of the reason for being referred to me, asking “what brings you in here today?” turned out to be the wrong question to ask. The more appropriate way initiating a counseling relationship begins with introductions and obtaining background information from the client increasing the trust level between client and the counselor. During the session, I detected my “machine gun questions” meaning I never provided my client adequate time to respond before I asked another question; as a result,…

Journal: Self-Assessment As a result of utilizing skills in the mock counseling video such as attending behaviors, encouragers, paraphrase with checkout, and reflecting of feeling, I was able to gain better insight into my ability to apply these skills within the helping relationship. Specifically, I came to realize that it is necessary for me to be more aware of my verbal and nonverbal encouragers such as nodding and saying “Mhmm”. Honestly, I felt as if my nodding became distracting despite the fact that I utilized it to ensure the client knew that they were being heard and that I was interested to hear more of their story. While I do believe that I was successful in conveying interest and warmth, I could have utilized a more diverse range…

I used minimal socratic questioning and could have used more that "what" questions. Once the process recording was underway I became more comfortable. I also learned that I need to be more patient when working with a client. I need to remember it is their session and it should go at their pace not at the speed I think it should go. I feel that I am getting more confident with my skills and found myself using things that have been learned previously.…

I wish I used less fillers and mazes and was more precise. Sometimes, I would use too much selective attention, for example I focused so much on the interviewee’s family relationships and reciprocal treatment, that I forgot to ask about her resentment for putting others first. I also could have questioned her coping skills regarding her family’s laxity. Whereas in interview one, I believe my strengths included providing great minimal encouragers, nodding my head, counselor congruence, and showing greater interest.…

In the group video the practitioner has skill of having experience in counselling session because the way she was talking to the group she was able to keep the group together, she had knowledge of resources in the surrounding areas that would be beneficial to her clients. The fact that she reframed what they talked about with the group shows she was interested and ready to help them achieve their goals as they all seemed to have issues with childcare. She informed the group that it is their group so they take over with what they want to do as far as snacks and childcare options they might want to consider. She was paying attention to the group through listening to the group suggestions and offering them responses that will benefit the clients.…

I figure that with time and practice I will eventually feel more comfortable and confident talking to clients. I am finding it difficult to shut my problem solving part of the brain off and just allow the client to work through his or her own problems in a manner that is best suited for themselves. As a communicator I recognize that I ask a lot of closed ended questions and not so many open-ended questions. I am realizing that this a good skill to possess in all walks of life, and I plan to continue to ask more open-ended questions in my everyday life whether talking to friends, clients, family, or…

This time gave me an opportunity to undertake reflective listening through active listening which according to Rogers (1975) in his “client-centered” therapy argues that it encourages the client to share the information in more depth than if I was only asking directive questions. This enabled me to gain information when the client brought out the underlying issues including those that I had not thought about. The active listening also improved my relationship with the client since I was able to express acceptance by avoiding any expression of disagreement or judgement thus making him open up and also trust me as his couselor. This method also left me with enough time to explore and diagnose the issue thus noting the new ways of approach to the…

This approach is interesting because it addresses the resiliency of the client and the client can build upon a strength-based foundation to work towards solutions (George, 2008). I feel that this approach can be applied in many different situations to build on the strengths and past successes than to correct the past failures or mistakes. Secondly, in this approach the therapist understands, accepts, and uses the client’s unique worldviews during the process of identifying and amplifying exceptions (George, 2008). Lastly, this approach uses the imagination of client to visualize the future through questioning that can allow for a clear picture of what the solution may look like even when the problem may not be clearly defined. I find one of my strengths through the use of the peer evaluation form shows that I have good techniques to ask the right questions to gain a better understanding of the problem the client is presenting.…

I feel sad to have spent so much time not hearing the people I love. I can recall instances when I have given advice based on what I have heard, without checking-out or being sure that I was in the other persons frame of reference. Since beginning the course and having begun to learn the skills required to achieve Rogers’s six conditions, I have become more self-aware and more honest and open in my communication, as well as more emotional. I have seen evidence of the same with my fellow students. The theory of person centred counselling and the six conditions is greatly enabled by our group practice sessions.…

While managing to present the client with certain challenges that allow them to see the action that needs to be taken, and what can they do in order to bring about change. It is also very necessary to help the clients pinpoint their own personal strengths, understand what’s hindering them from using available resources, and to have them specifically state what they want they want in life and how they want to live it. Professional boundaries/roles on the therapist behalf is to be explicitly stated before the therapy is in session. Maybe also a little clarification of the rules of therapy and what therapy is exactly since individuals tend to have misconstrued information about therapy in general. Some important characteristics that a good counselor should have is the willingness to listen, to provide encouragement, to be empathetic, to be nonjudgmental, to have patience, and to most of all uphold the promise to keep things confidential unless that client is at risk for harming themselves as well as others.…
