Secondly for open and close questions I find myself saying one more than the other, where in my case I would ask more closed than open questions. Although as I was asking many closed questions I did notice that I could have change some of them to open questions. For example, a closed question I had asked was “Do you find the work hard to understand?” which going over my feedback I could hav switched it to an open question which I changed could have changed it to “What do you find hard understanding in the work you get?” as if I have done this would help me get more information on my client without having to ask many closed questions. To add on although I did have some flaws I do think I did well on some of the counselling skills such as using body language, facial expressions and gestures where I remembered SOLER and I faced my client squarely to show I am ready to listen, had an open posture to not …show more content…
My observer noticed the awkwardness and how there was silence and I realized one of the main reasons for those awkward silences was because my main focus was to try and remember word for word what our client has said rather than genuinely listening to what the client had to say. Additionally, I believe that in order to become a “good” counsellor it should come in a natural way like how one of Roger’s guide to counselling is genuineness and how I shouldn’t be thinking of what comes next like “Should I say an open or closed question next?” or “Did I paraphrase?” or “Am I positioned correctly to be facing my client?” I believe all these things should be a natural thing you do when you are a counsellor and your main focus should be to help your client and advise
