Journal: Self-Assessment As a result of utilizing skills in the mock counseling video such as attending behaviors, encouragers, paraphrase with checkout, and reflecting of feeling, I was able to gain better insight into my ability to apply these skills within the helping relationship. Specifically, I came to realize that it is necessary for me to be more aware of my verbal and nonverbal encouragers such as nodding and saying “Mhmm”. Honestly, I felt as if my nodding became distracting despite the fact that I utilized it to ensure the client knew that they were being heard and that I was interested to hear more of their story.
