Title: Copper Cycle

Experiment Time: 1: 30 pm

Purpose

This lab experiment is divided into two parts A an B . In part A , we will start with our given solution of and synthesize a number of copper compounds by chemical reactions and observing every colour change and appearance, As a final step of part A , we will recover copper metal . In Part B we will synthesize two copper (I) compounds and observe their reactions . However we also get to learn using new techniques for instance , Decantation technique , vacuum filtration

This presence of precipitates indicates a reaction had occurred. Looking deeply we can see the OH- ions of the NaOH solutuon reacted with ions of the forming a dark blue color.

The chemical equation : (aq) + 2NaOH (aq) --> (s) + (aq)

Net ionic equation is

(aq) + 2OH- (aq) --> (s)

Preparation of CuO

In this second reaction , we use a Bunsen burner , to heat up between and . The observation I noticed here was how during the heating process , we could see the colour of the solution was changing from blue to black slowly. Not only that , but black precipitate settling at the bottom of the beaker.

Equation :

When adding 15mL of to the above solution and keep stirring to dissolve everything , the solution color changes to very light blue . After this reaction we add 0.15g of grey powder zinc dust , the black precipitate started floating in the solution making the solution become creamy blue colour . As we continue stirring we get light brown clumps of Cu in the solution. The copper metal is then separated using the vacuum flltration method with the Buchner funnel. During this process the copper metal is washed using 5mL of 95% ethanol in the Buchner funnel to get the metal out of the solution and then we dried out the metal for about 5 minutes to get rid of the water molecules.Then we get the copper metal and weight it in the analytical balance
