Conflicts in the Team Environment: How to Overcome These Obstacles

Even though people think conflicts will not arise in their team, it is vital to have conflict resolution strategies in place in order to avoid conflict and maintain a strong level of team communication. When becoming part of a team, obstacles are common, and they can come from outside of the group, as well as from within. There are many different steps that team members must go through in order to avoid conflicts getting out of hand. Teams must have a common goal that they are working toward in order to overcome these obstacles.
Conflict resolution is “the ability of the team to discuss and resolve differences” (The University of Phoenix, p. 1). Conflict resolution is therefore when two or more people fail to see eye to eye, this includes

On the other side of the spectrum, if there is a team member that is unaware of their conflict resolution style, they will not see any problems with their approach. For instance, they may be very confrontational, and if they are not aware of that, they could be seen as overbearing. This may hurt the situation rather than help it. Now that we have seen how different conflict management styles can affect the team, let’s go over some of the strategies that a team should go through to reach their goals.
There are different strategies that team members can follow in order to reach a common goal. These strategies will create a more open communication between team members. According to the Oklahoma State, Virtual Education site these strategies include:
1. “When angry, separate yourself from the situation and take time to cool out.”
2. “Attack the problem, not the person. Start with a compliment.”
3. “Communicate your feelings assertively, NOT aggressively. Express them without blaming.”
4. “Focus on the issue, NOT your position about the issue.”
5. “Accept and respect that individual opinions may differ, don’t try to force compliance, work to develop common agreement.”
6. “Do not review the situation as a competition, where one has to win and one has to lose. Work toward a solution where both parties can have some of their needs met.”
