In recent years it has come to the attention of many that Americas most beloved sport, football, is actually very dangerous. It is widely known that you can sprain your ankle, break a bone or even get a concussion, all in the name of the sport; however, many are unaware of or overlook that fact that something such as a concussion or repeated hits to the head can lead up to a deadly disease known as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). CTE, defined by the Concussion Foundation is a “degenerative brain disease found in athletes, military veterans, and others with a history of repetitive brain trauma”. It is important that they and their parents are aware of the risks. Protecting oneself from concussions needs to start as early as possible; In football, it all begins with the peewee leagues. Neuropathologist Ann McKee at Boston University states that “because a young athlete’s brain is still developing, the effects of a concussion, or even many smaller hits over a season, can be far more detrimental, compared to the head injury in an older player.” At this stage other than not playing at all, it is important to understand how to play as safe as possible. Many coaches for young boys in the peewee league may not be fully educated in football and safety, because they are not forced to know, most organizations only require an online class every few years to stay a coach. If anything is to be taken away from this, it is that safety above anything else needs to be the upmost important thing in contact sports. Entertainment is meant to be enjoyed, instead most with the knowledge of our current dangerous practice watch on and question the morality of the once loved sport. In the dictionary as an example for ‘unethical’ it says, “it is unethical to torment any creature for entertainment” and with football in its current state that is exactly what is going on. In order to stop this disease from untimely destroying the lives of athletes, veterans, and many others, the dangers of head injuries need to be made
