While both are ensembles with a conductor that play music arranged into different parts together, there are several important differences to take note of when deciding which one fits each musician perfectly.

First of all, not every instrument is represented in every ensemble. A concert band, often called symphonic wind band, consists, as the name suggests, predominantly of wind instruments. Woodwinds like flutes, piccolos, oboes, clarinets, bass-clarinets, bassoons and contrabassoons as well as brass instruments like trumpets, french horns, trombones, euphoniums or baritones and tubas are joined by saxophones, percussion

In a wind band, the flutes, piccolos, clarinets, oboes and bassoons sit in the front rows, while the brass and percussion instruments sit in the back and on the sides. The added string section in a symphonic orchestra is seated in the front, the woodwinds sit in two rows behind them, with the french horns on the left and the rest of the brass section on the right. The percussion section, whose size changes depending on the piece that is played, is distributed behind the wind instruments. Additional instruments like the harp or the piano are usually seated on the left , while a choir is standing or sitting either behind or in front of the orchestra.

Another important difference to note is the repertoire and sound colour of a concert band compared to that of a symphonic orchestra. While both might essentially be capable of playing the same pieces, a symphonic orchestra has a wider range of sound due to the added element of the string section. Many of the well known composers of the classical era rarely composed for ensembles without strings, which makes it difficult to arrange certain pieces for a concert band without loss of

From middle school to high school, band became a vital part of my life. It was all I knew, it was where I felt comfortable, and this was where I pratically began learning about my leadership skills. However, my curiousity grew when I was introduced to Class Council. I thought that there was no difference, and I naively thought that since I have been a part of a leadership role for about 4 years, everyone knows me, so I thought Class Council could not be so hard. I was terribly wrong.…

Starting my first fellowship in elementary school in the fifth grade by playing the flute and getting instructed by one of the best band instructor’s ever Mr. Hartz. But before moving on to the flute every little person played their first instrument which was the recorder where we played in the fourth grade. At this time music wasn't as advanced and the songs we played included lullaby type of songs including Mary had a little lamb, Hot Cross buns, and many more. Since I played band in elementary school starting from the fifth to the eleventh grade, I’ve been real accustomed to all musical aspects.…

Attila Eguia 12/31/17 Period 2 First Suite in E-Flat for Military Band The First Suite in E-Flat for Military Band Op.28, No.1 by Gustav Holst is particularly unpopular due to it’s somewhat esoteric instrumentation,as the song was composed for a military band which is considered to be a wind orchestra instead. Orchestras with string instruments are far more popular and is the reason for its unpopularity outside of wind bands. It being so praised, it’s known beloved and popular in concert band repertoire ,I’ve heard this piece many times before deciding to finally rehearse…

Typically “The early symphonies were in three movements (fast-slow-fast) and fairly short (15-20 minutes)” (The Classical Era). Since the pieces were shorter, the length of the performance was shorter. Orchestras typically perform more than one piece of music, but there was not as much variety of music during that time since the orchestra was new. Also, the orchestra was not used for entertainment; therefore, it was shorter.…

During the classical music concert the listeners keep their emotions and feeling inside and show those only after ending of the performance by applauding to the musicians. There is another interesting difference with applause. People show their empathy to artists at any time during or after song they perform in the case of the House band on the stage. In the case of New York Philharmonic concert there are only two reasons to applaud. The first is greeting and to show appreciation before the concert begins when the orchestra members will all be seated on the stage.…
