One of my favorite songs is a song called As Real as You and Me by Rihanna. I first heard the song while watching the move Home. It started playing while a characters sacrifices himself for the greater good. The gorgeous song along with the character’s courageous sacrifice moved me.
The impact As Real as You and Me had on me would not have been the same without Rihanna’s poignant voice. I have listened to a few of Rihanna’s songs, but none of them moved me like this one did. Very few vocalists have the ability to breathe life into music and inspire people; Rihanna has this gift. The lyrics describe numerous situations in which one’s life, or even the whole world, could end in the blink of an eye. An example of one of those situations is the lyric, “The earth could quake to ruin, we could drift off in our sleep, I know we hate to think about it, but it’s as real as you and me.” The song taught me the value of the moments I am blessed to live. Along with expressing the delicacy of life, the song also articulates how people shouldn’t try to escape the inevitable. If a person is meant to go, then he should allow fate to take its course, which is easier said than done. The line “If I should go, hold my hand, If I should leave, darling cover me, please,” sounds very courageous and fearless, although the way Rihanna sings it sounds more like she feels nostalgic.
