People in the audience of the Phil Donahue
This semester, I attended an event called True Tales from County Hospitals at the Ray Stark Theater. I had the opportunity to watch a documentary called No Mas Bebés and met the director. No Mas Bebés is a documentary that follows Madrigal vs. Quilligan lawsuit filed against L.A County hospital for sterilizing women without informed consent. Here is the background story. During the 1960s, hospitals were taking actions to reduce human population growth.…
While this was not my first time watching this movie, I felt like I got much more from the movie watching it now because of my improved understanding of the various conditions (including personality disorders) present in the patients and the staff of the facility. Mac was a very interesting and complex character, that while at first glace likeable, it was hard to get out of your mind all the horrible things he had done to people, including minors. He did seem, at least superficially, to care about the fellow patients. I feel that he actually helped many of the patients, treated them with more kindness than most the staff, and the patients seemed to genuinely enjoy being around him.…
The wrench is a useful tool used for a variety of different tasks, like tightening nuts and bolts. Without it, nuts and bolts everywhere would be falling out of place, and people everywhere would go “nuts” trying to reassemble desks and reattach the tires onto their cars. In Ken Kesey’s One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, people do in fact “go nuts,” and wrenches are indeed used, but not in the exact same ways. Randle McMurphy, the main character of this novel, frequently causes mishap in the insane asylum he lives in, causing him to go “nuts”; he constantly messes with its orderly and mechanical schedule.…
Five Days at Memorial: Life and Death in a Storm-Ravaged Hospital by American journalist Sheri Fink is a very inspirational book because it focused on the events that happened in Memorial Medical Center when the hospital was flooded and had no electricity after Hurricane Katrina struck the city. Time, space, communication, and identity are portrayed throughout the book. These four factors are important in inter-ethnic relationships between patients and health care providers. Being able to identify these factors in a clinical setting, health care providers can provide more efficient care for all patients.…
I shadowed Dr. McAlhaney, who owns her own family practice, during the Fridays I had available during my summer classes. This practice is located in my small, rural hometown that currently lacks a hospital, and as a result, has a very limited number of physicians. The nearest hospital is over 30 minutes away. Over my time shadowing here, I saw over 60 patients with a variety of health conditions. I would arrive early in the morning and leave near 6 p.m. at night.…
My clinical experience so far has been quite interesting, because I learned basic clinical procedures and preventions that I know will benefit me as a nurse in the near future. During lab, we discussed infection control, personal hygiene, and isolation precautions. These procedures impact my personal health and wellness, because I need to ensure that I am using the proper techniques in order to keep me safe. Also, I know that it is important to make sure my patients are not at risk of developing hospital associated infections.…
According to Royce, evaluation is a process that critically examines a program. Evaluation involves collecting and analyzing information about a program's activities, characteristics, and outcomes (Royce, 2009). Evaluation helps with judgments about a program and to improve its effectiveness, or to inform programming decisions (Royce, 2009). Evaluation and client feedback are an ethical requirement and are necessary for effective service delivery. Proper evaluation is honest it shows that the program has strengths as well as limitations.…
I interviewed my seventy-five year old grandpa Donnie, researched the Voyles lineage book that my grandma Arlene helped compile, and talked with my dad in order to find out more about my family’s history. According to Grandpa Donnie, it all began in 1759 when Jacob Voils, his wife, and his four sons landed in Port Charleston from Wales. Jacob was a poor man and could not afford the family’s way to Charleston. Desperate, he made a deal with the ship’s captain to indenture his oldest son William Voils as a crew hand for four years in exchange for the family’s way. Upon regaining his freedom, William furiously changed the spelling of his last name to Voyles to break all ties from his father Jacob.…
Huttman had a really interesting point of view, which gets you thinking in what you would do if you were her. Huttman as a nurse had the point of view of always honoring her patient’s wishes and taking care of them. Nurses see things differently because they are the ones who spent most of their time with the disease and they also are the ones who see their patient ’s suffering in horrific pain. In this country, patient’s have no right to decide when they want to die and it has brought up a lot of debates on people who are against it or with this law and this would be the discussion in this essay.…
Medical Technology and the Drama Within The reading “Medical Technology and Ethical Issues” by William E. Thompson and Joseph V Hickey brings to light an ongoing controversy, and ethical dilemma with medical technological advancement. The authors started this article with a dramatic entrance of an ambulance skidding to a halt in front of the emergency room. The sense of urgency continues with staff persons entering data into a machine for patient medical decisions.…
The patients are here because of their inability to fulfill normality in society. But Nurse Ratched abuses her own power and puts the patients through countless confrontations of intimidation and manipulation. What nurse, who vouches her life to helping patients get back on their feet, corrupts the control she has over the patients. Nurse Ratched did not treat these patients with proper care. She continuously abused the patients instead of trying to actually help them fit back into social standards.…
Though they begin to see what exactly he is intending, attempting to lift his commitment. However, the patients cannot help but to see that he is becoming how they once were before he showed up, “After [McMurphy] doesn’t stand up for [them] any longer” (p. 173) The suggestion here shows how much the patients on the ward relied on McMurphy and respected him for standing up to the authorities. However, little does McMurphy know, it takes a greater toll on some of the patients.…
Today is Thursday, September 22 and Grey’s Anatomy comes back on and I’m so excited! I feel like it’s been years since I last watched an episode, but honestly it’s only been a few months. I watched all the seasons on Netflix after my mom told me how good of a show it was. When I started watching it season 11 was on TV already. When my mom would watch it I would have to go to my room or another room in the house so that I didn’t see what was going on.…
Forks over Knives is effective in using scare tactics to show the harmful effects that consuming meat and dairy products has on the body, but offers the opposition a very small opportunity to defend and support their own case. This film does a wonderful job bringing in facts and showing the audience how bad American health truly is. Forks over Knifes states that the average American now carries an extra twenty-three pounds of weight. That number is absolutely mind boggling, and demonstrates that the state of American health is concerning. This extra weight can contribute to numerous different diseases in children and adults, and it also might lead to early death in some cases.…
She enjoys humiliating the patients in front of McMurphy because she knows there is little he could do about it. McMurphy is torn between doing what is necessary to get out and helping his friends. By applying Rd Laing’s “The…
