While the stories were not similar plot wise, the themes could be compared. The theme of “Blessings” was adjusting to change, and the theme of “The Count of Monte Cristo” was hope. When each author developed the theme they started it off with a character who was hopeless. In the play, it was Jesse and in the other story, it was Dante. But when each character finds that sliver of hope, everything changes for them. Jesse finds a friend who he can talk to and Dante finds a hope of escaping the prision. Although the two writings are similar in some ways, they are also very different. While the play was on a cliff, the story was based in a prison. There were two completely different plot lines in each. In “The Count of Monte Cristo,” the theme is developed when he hears the sound that sounds like a prisoner trying to escape. However in “Blessings,” a new girl, Rene just moved to the countryside to live with her cousin Jesse, who isn’t very excited to be living near her at first.
