Throughout swimming upstream there are many ups and even more downs with Harold and his children. The reason for this is Harold choosing his favourites; unfortunately, his favourite is always the child who he believes is going to be the most successful in sport. This is because he wants to live his dream of fame in sports through his children because he had missed opportunities himself. He believes John is going to the more successful swimmer purely because he was better at freestyle, therefore supported John more which made it harder for Tony. Harold trained John more Tony in secret because he didn’t believe Tony’s chances of success were as high. This cause Tony to feel like he was not as good at swimming, which lead to him almost give up on his dream. Harold frequently got drunk and said things that hurt Tony, for example, “I wish you were never born”. Harold tried to restrict how well Tony did so John could be the successful one, however this failed and Tony came out on top. Harold was still not supportive when Tony raced in the Commonwealth Games. Whereas in the movie Shine David Helfcott’s father, Peter, is very supportive of him because pianist himself beforehand. He helped David practise and supported him with his gigs and competitions.
