George Washington vs. Abraham Lincoln
(A Comparison of Presidencies)
Two of the most famous presidents in United States history are George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. These well known, and well respected presidents have a lot of similarities, but they also have quite a bit of differences. How they compare is very interesting, and very important, to our nation’s foundation.
George Washington President Washington played an enormously important part in shaping the function of the job and role that all future presidents will play. He was elected into office on April 30, 1789. The tax was enforced by the government on all distilled beverages. At the time whiskey was the most popular among those beverages so the tax became known as the “whiskey tax”. There was quite a bit of pushback among some parts of the country and protests became violent. The new government stood firm and through perseverance showed the nation they were capable of making and enforcing laws. Later, during his presidency, Lincoln too made history as the very first president who implemented the federal income tax. The tax was set at 3% for anyone who made over $800. Although the tax implement was repealed in 1871, by 1909 the government passed the 16th Amendment of the Constitution which is the federal income tax system we still use today.
Because of Washington’s “Proclamation of Neutrality” he kept our new country and very small army out of harm’s way. Even though the Proclamation was opposed by many who wanted to join the fight, it saved America’s trade relation with the countries at war. Years later, Lincoln’s foreign policy again preserved the nations relations with outside countries keeping them from interfering with the Civil War and choosing
