There is plentiful discourse as to why the Northern Union won the Civil War in 1865 against the Southern Confederacy. Although the military leadership from Abraham Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant in the North and Jefferson Davis and Robert E. Lee in the South both impacted the outcome, Jefferson Davis’s poor political leadership both as president and commander in chief led to the Northern victory, particularly his defective judgements regarding military affairs and his moderate leadership as president that yielded tenuous relations with the Confederate people. According to David M. Potter, Jefferson Davis was not fit to command the Confederate Army. He was “his own secretary of war and his own general in chief” in which he included departmentalization…

He also spent a lot of his time trying to soothe political egos rather than coming up with policies. Lincoln worked slowly and cautiously which was in some ways a detriment to his war efforts.…

Our teacher told us that Fairfax County Public Schools is making a new middle school and that they needed some help with naming it. The person I chose to do my research on is Jefferson Davis. Jefferson Davis was born on June 3, 1808 in Christian (which is now called Todd) County, Kentucky. He was a congressman, a soldier, and eventually the president of the United States of America. I think the new middle school should have Jefferson Davis’ name because he was the president of the United States and a lot of other presidents, like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Abraham Lincoln, have schools named after them, so I think Jefferson Davis could have a school named after him, too.…

At the onset of the Civil War the South had numerous apparent advantages. Three of the advantages that seemed to have been an advantage was: presidential leadership, slavery, and a sound military strategy. During my essay I will explain why these appeared to be an advantage possessed by the South but ended up working against the South and also which of these three “apparent” advantages had the greatest impact on the South losing the war. Presidential leadership appeared to be an advantage that the South possessed because Jefferson Davis was seen as a better president than Abraham Lincoln especially in regards to war. Davis had a combat record in the Mexican War; which he was cited for bravery.…
