Short stories are “an invented prose narrative shorter than a novel usually dealing with a few characters and aiming at unity of effect and often concentrating on the creation of mood rather than plot.” (Merriam – Webster) These can have many differences and similarities. These factors could be the setting, the plot, the characters, point of view, tone, symbolism, theme, language, narrated time, content and more. “The thousand injuries of Fortunato I had borne as I best could, but when he ventured upon insult I vowed revenge.” (Allan) is the first sentence in the short story by “The Cask of Amontillado” by American Edgar Allan Poe. Another difference in one story from another is the reason for the murder. In the story “A Rose for Emily” the main character who fell in love with Homer thought he would leave her and so killed her for him to stay with her even in death. This could be the typical “crime of love” when in the story “A Cask of Amontillado” the main character Montresor felt undignified by Fortunato and so killed him as revenge for what Fortunato has done to him. Also, another difference is about the main character personality of Emily which is direct and is referred in the story as an outcast and being strange when Montresor’s personality is indirect and is presented in the story as vengeful and sadist. It is written in third person limited omniscient.
