“Miss Brill” compared to “A Rose for Emily” “Miss Brill” was published in 1922, written by William Faulkner with the main character being that of Miss Brill. “A Rose for Emily” published in 1930, written by Katherine Mansfield with the main character being Emily Grierson. Although both stories were written long ago the stories are just as prevalent in today’s society. Similarly both Miss Brill and Emily suffered from loneliness and their own delusions, on the other hand Miss Brill was never involved romantically with a man, but Miss Emily’s only romance ended in murder. Miss Brill worked as a teacher and also read the newspaper to an elderly man. These jobs gave her a purpose in life, one could say. But she had no romantic relationships,

We never know if she ever had a man in her life. However with Miss Emily, after her father dies she meets a man named Homer Barron who is a foreman of a construction company in town to work on the sidewalks. Her father would not approve of him either, he would have considered him of a lower class and he would have been run off. But it becomes clear that Emily decided not to let this one get away. After her death it is discovered that Homer Barron body is found in an upstairs bedroom dressed in a nightshirt with his arms almost in a position as if he was holding someone who had been sleeping next to him with long silver hair on the pillow the same as Miss Emily hair color. Although these two stories “Miss Brill” and “A Rose for Emily” are about two lonely women from different parts of the world. In some ways they are very similar when it comes to their loneliness and their delusions. Miss Emily does have a houseman that spends time taking care of her. Whereas Miss Brill is all alone in her apartment and evens imagines hearing the fur crying. But, so very different in the end when Miss Emily took such a drastic measure to keep Homer in her life, by killing
