Being born, and raised, in the United States, it is easy to see that many aspects of our culture is that of an individualistic society. Freedom of choice, personal responsibility, self-determination and expression are all highly valued while repression of dissent, group property, and other aspects of a collectivist culture looked at with suspicion, and sometimes, ignorance.
