The goal for cognitive therapy is to change the patient’s patterns in order to change their responses to difficult situations. It can also be used to treat personality disorders. If I were a cognitive behavioral therapist, I would first use verbal techniques to elicit Betty’s automatic thoughts, analyze the logic behind the thoughts, and identify maladaptive assumptions. In the issue of Betty’s loneliness and fear of developing friends with others, her automatic thought toward developing friendship is that “she didn’t make friends easily, she point out: no obese woman does” (Yalom, 2007, P. 123). Her maladaptive assumption is that “the singles world is impossible for obese people” (Yalom, 2007, P.123). I will start off asking her questions about what she meant by no obese woman make friends easily. Is she referring to herself or in general of all obese people? Exposure therapy serves “to provide data on the thoughts, images, physiological symptoms, and self-reported level of tension experienced by the anxious patient” and the diversion technique is used to “reduce strong emotions and decrease negative thinking, include physical activity, social contact, work, play and visual imagery” (Wedding&Corsini, 2014, p. 253). Betty’s core belief is that no one wants to be her friend because of her obesity. In order to change the belief that Betty has, I will work on the idea of diversion technique. With diversion technique, it can help Betty consider different ways of addressing her negative concerns and help her make more positive decisions that can be life changing and become more positive. First, I would deal directly with her idiosyncratic thought by lifting the problem of Betty thinking that obese people like her will not have friends because of their weight. By helping Betty to change the way she thinks, I will help her be aware that her belief is not true and it is only true because she is making them to be
