Clinical reasoning is a process and term used regularly by health care professionals that includes nursing. It consists of expert skills that are learnt through knowledge, cognitive thinking and experience. Clinical reasoning is essential to nursing care as it shows the thinking process of the nurse and that the nurse can competently and safely deliver care to diverse patients (Harmon & Thompson, 2014). In conjunction with clinical reasoning, the terminology critical thinking, clinical judgement and clinical decision making are used collaboratively. There are many resources about clinical reasoning and studies used on nursing students, graduate nurses and postgraduate nurses. One key strategy, the Thinking Aloud (TA) strategy, will be critically discussed in this assignment, including the positive aspects and limitations. Following this, the terminology critical thinking, clinical judgement and clinical decision will be discussed so as to differentiate their meanings and how it applies to nursing care, showing their use in novice and expert nursing. Finally, there will be a discussion of reflection on practice in nursing care, showing the process of clinical reasoning.
As defined by Levett-Jones et al. (2010), clinical reasoning is the process by which nurses collect cues, process the information, come to an understanding of a patient problem or situation, plan and implement interventions, evaluate outcomes, and reflect and learn from this process.
