Clinic Leaders Vs Managers

There have been many discussions about the differences between leaders and managers. Some use these two words, interchangeably, while some say these two words are different entities. Just to start, do you know just the simple definition of the two words? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, defines a ‘leader’ as ‘a person who leads or commands a group and a manager as a person responsible for controlling or administering all or part of a company or similar organization. The two words almost have the same meaning but what differentiates the two is the word “controlling”.

A manager has control over certain processes and has the power to make all the decision making. For example, they choose who to hire, they create a budget and a plan, and they help facilitate problem solving within an organization. John Kotter wrote in “What Leaders Really Do” mentions that “management is about coping with complexity. It’s practices and procedures are largely a response to the emergency of large, complex organizations.” (cite)

I would see these two . The physician was the leader of the clinic and we had the clinic manager. Working together in unity, they were able to create a functioning happy environment. Looking back at my rotations, I would see the leader and manager. The leader was the physician and the manger was the clinic manager.
