The Travis family, African American consists of four members who reside in. The Mother, Shantel, age 52, her son, Moses, 25, a daughter, Angelica 18. Shantel has a dual diagnosis of substance abuse and alcoholism. The Mother, Shantel, and daughter Angelica, 18, along with her granddaughter, Gabriella age two, reside in Emerald Hills, San Diego, living in a Section eight house. (Section 8 is available to low income families who qualify) Currently there is a long waiting list.

My first task would be to focus on the family strengths, in hopes of establishing a rapport with the family and helping the family to understand the goal and plan for their therapy. I would start with a three generation genogram, to help me get a more informative picture of the family and patterns that have and do exist. The mother Shantel is a functioning alcoholic and occasional drug user. She states she has been sober for three years, which is great, but does not mean that she does not need help. Moses, 25 has no children, and is living with his girlfriend who has four children under the age of 12. I would like to speak with Moses, and hear what he has to say about his upbringing. My goal would be to establish a strong client-therapist rapport with him. Shantel, Moses mothers states that there is unresolved tension between them. Although they interact well with one another, Shantel says there is a cautious closeness with her son. Moses does not open up to his mother. Moses does attend most of the major family events if he does not work. I think an individual session with Moses would be a good first
