Chris's Graduation Sequence In The Film, Backward

Chris’s blind arrogance and views of society are shown throughout the film; however, a scene in particular is his graduation sequence where the director uses cinematography, voice over, and dialogue to portray this. It is clear Chris has no respect or pride in graduating. This is shown to us by the way he jumps on stage when his name is called. Straight after a mid shot of Chris’s parents is shown who look appalled by Chris’ behaviour, followed by a close up of Chris fathers face who doesn't look pleased. This makes the viewers think that Chris has deliberately done this to mortify his parents and has done this on purpose to defy them, revealing to the audience that there is a conflict between them. During this the director also repeatedly shows shots of graduation hats in the air in between the flashbacks. Viewers can distinguish between the flashback and present time as the director uses filter on the flashback. He might have done this to symbolise freedom of the students who have graduated as it has become a tradition for graduates to throw their hats in the air after graduating as a way of expressing their happiness, freedom, and success.
