There were many things that led Chris McCandless into the wild. In my perspective, what led McCandless into the wilderness was his family problems. More imparticular, his father. The downfalls of their relationship cause many other hardships to Chris’s life.
Krakauer says “Chris's smoldering anger, it turns out, was fueled by a discovery he’d made two summers earlier, during his cross-country wanderings. When he arrived in California, he’d visited the El Segundo neighborhood where he’d spent the first six years of his life. He called on a number of old family friends who still lived there, and from their answers to his queries, Chris pieced together the facts of his father's previous marriage and subsequent divorce, facts to which he hadn’t been privy.”(page 121). When i'm gone, my family will be finished, gone forever. So I asked Alex if I could adopt him, if he would be my grandson.” (page 55). McCandless found this question very uncomfortable, so instead said, “We’ll talk about it when i get back from Alaska, Ron.” (page 55). This is a perfect example of Chris keeping his feelings inside. All because of what he found out about his father many years ago, it ruined the relationships he could have possibly developed because of his insecurities. McCandless didn’t want to be held accountable or responsible, or at the least have his feelings somewhere he wasnt comfortable with. So he dogged the question that was most important to someone who cared a lot about him. In conclusion, Chris McCandless was led to the wild by the obstacles he forced to lived with that was brought from the discovery of his fathers previous family. He lived confused and insecure. He felt that his whole life was lie and that he couldn't rely on any of his family. Therefore, he believed living simple and in the wild would be easier and more
