One of the first things you should do when forming a business is to retain a competent lawyer (Byrd and Megginson 83). If you are in need and looking to choose a lawyer, there are certain characteristics you should look for in your lawyer. Some of the key characteristics are that they should be well educated, have knowledge of the law, have the ability to see the big picture, and have talent for weighing alternatives. If you are not sure if a certain lawyer fits these characteristics, you can always check their credentials. For example, they should have a law degree from a college to make sure they are educated. To make sure they have proper knowledge of the law, you can check any past cases he or she has had in the past. Choose one that has dealt with similar cases that you may find yourself or your business in as well. Before hiring a lawyer, talk to them and see if you meet eye to eye while talking about the big picture. You can also test a lawyer but giving them a possible situation you may find yourself in while starting a small business and see how the lawyer’s talent for weighing alternatives is. If he/she gives you multiple solutions to your situation, he/she might be a good choice to consider.
