This paper describes the process by which a three-component mixture was separated and identified. The mixture was separated with the aid of a separatory funnel and various solvents acids and bases. The compound was found to be comprised of meta-nitroaniline, naphthalene, and benzoic acid / 2-napthol. All three of them are organic compounds with melting points in the order they were listed 111-114, 79-82 and 121-122/121-123 °C. the percent yield of each component was also calculated at the end based on the initial assumption that the mixture was evenly comprised of all three components.

The unknown three-component mixture was an odorless pale powdery solid. Ether more specifically Diethyl ether commonly referred to as “ether” was an ideal solvent for the unknown component mixture. Its low solubility in water combined with ability to dissolve a plethora of organic compounds and low density make it ideal. Once the mixture was dissolved it was time to separate out the three-components. To separate the base out an acid was used more specifically hydrochloric acid. The acid reacted with basic elements of the mixture and allowed for the simple extraction of the unknown basic compound. The same idea was then again applied when extracting the acid, a bas was used more specifically sodium hydroxide. The acid reacted with this base and separated off allowing us to drain in from the separatory funnel. What was left in the funnel was assumed to be the neutral component of the mixture.…
