The unknown three-component mixture was an odorless pale powdery solid. Ether more specifically Diethyl ether commonly referred to as “ether” was an ideal solvent for the unknown component mixture. Its low solubility in water combined with ability to dissolve a plethora of organic compounds and low density make it ideal. Once the mixture was dissolved it was time to separate out the three-components. To separate the base out an acid was used more specifically hydrochloric acid. The acid reacted with basic elements of the mixture and allowed for the simple extraction of the unknown basic compound. The same idea was then again applied when extracting the acid, a bas was used more specifically sodium hydroxide.
