The history of Latin America in the 20th century was mainly centered on the liberation of the working class from the struggles of oppression, both socially and economically. The rise of liberation theology gave society the opportunity to reclaim their religion to pursue a new life, a happier life that would make way for a more just society. Both Paulo Freire’s Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Che Guevara’s concept of the “new man” in his article, “Socialism and man in Cuba”, outlined the flaws of the working class and the steps that need to be taken in order to free themselves from their oppressors. The pedagogy deals with the idea of theory and practice, and the fight to regain their humanity while provoking a socialist movement one that is necessary for Che’s concept of the “new man and woman” to be born. Although they each have their own ideologies, they have a common goal to educate the oppressed and their oppressors so that they become aware in order to fight for liberation through praxis of their struggle. Throughout time social injustice has been a reoccurring problem that has yet to become extinct. There have been many attempts to rid injustice, for example, the rise of liberation theology that started with the renewal of the church to hopefully attain absolute salvation for the people. Education by relationship of student and teacher has a significant impact in developing the individual, but self-education and awareness of oneself and their role as an individual frees themselves from their oppressors. Ultimately, their goal is that of liberation theologists, to use their knowledge to persuade others to become aware so that collectively, they can liberate their society from inequality to create a future suitable for all parties
