Her first experience with marriage wasn't even her choice, her grandma was the one that picked a man for her. His name was Logan Killicks. He would ask Janie to bring him some food, and when she would bring it to him, he would refuses to eat it. Then, he would ask for some water, but gag it back up. Janie was very concerned, so she called in a white doctor diagnose Tea Cake. She tells the doctor the story of their escape from the hurricane, and how he got bit by that dog. The doctor prescribes some pills and then pulls Janie out of the house to talk to her privately. He tells her that Tea Cake has been bitten by a mad dog, and that he most likely has rabies. He told Janie that the chance of Tea Cake living was very little, and the only real way to help him was to take him to the hospital and strap him down. Janie didn't want that for Tea Cake, and she knew he wouldn't want that either. So, the doctor told Janie that he would send for the antidote serum from the city, but warns her that Tea Cake should have gotten help a long time ago, and that It probably won’t help much now. A few days past, and Tea Cake began to change. When Janie leaves home to see about the medicine, she would do it in secret so that Tea Cake didn't have to worry. When Janie returns home, Tea Cake has become madly jealous because Sop told him that Mrs. Turner’s brother is back in town and has the same sickness as Tea Cake, which leads Tea Cake to think that Janie has been visiting Mrs. Turner’s brother. Janie tells him the truth, and reassures him of her love, but while she is putting him to bed, she feels a pistol underneath his pillow. She doesn't say anything about it. That night, Tea Cake had two choke attacks. The next day, Tea Cake had really changed. Janie, frightened by Tea Cake’s behavior, took out most of the bullets from the pistol so that it will snap three times before actually firing.
