Bellwether is a novel that in a broad spectrum shows what is known to be the chaos theory. Chaos theory is the logic that one or more variables lead to outcomes of an event or events, more like the snowball effect. The author makes sure that it is obvious to the reader how certain negative variables produce a positive outcome. Although, the chaos theory and snowball effect are similar, within the chaos theory after a while the chaos reaches a point of organization.
Connie Willis uses multiple events, examples and a specific character in her novel to support and show her ideas concerning the chaos theory. For example, Friedrich Kekule’ that had fallen into the trance on top of a bus and seen chains of carbon atoms dancing around wildly and then saw one of the carbon chains put its tail in its mouth, forming a ring. This was how he ended up discovering the benzene ring which led to the revolutionizing of …show more content…
Bennett and Sandy make statements as such as the ones on page 128 about Flip being behind everything that was going on currently (Willis, 1997). Flip is the essential variable in the chaos theory presented in Bellwether. Flip begins the initial path of chaos when she delivers the wrong package to Dr. Sandy, leaving Dr. Sandy to deliver the package which is how she meets Dr. Bennett. From this point the chaos starts increasing like a snowball, from Flip causing animosity between workers, banning smoking, which in turn affected her assistant, causing close extermination of Sandy and Bennett to all the sheep being loose inside of Hi-Tek. Even after Flip has left Hi-Tek her touch of chaos was still present, as shown when Sandy blames Flip for the sheep being loose and Shirl, (Flip’s assistant) stating “she’s not here, she quit” (Willis, 1997). Even though Sandy and Bennett went through all this chaos started by the actions Flip, this was what led them to their winning of the Niebnitz grant, discovery of fads and explanation of chaos
