Several accusations were made that manufacturers were incorrectly labeling the iron content on their products. The purpose of this experiment was to analyze the amount of iron in approximately one serving of Total Whole Grain cereal and in one iron tablet and determine if these accusations were true. The values collected would then be compared to the actual values for these products. Total cereal contains 100% of the recommended daily allowance for iron, and the iron tablet contains 361% of the recommended daily allowance for iron. The actual recommended daily allowances for the cereal and the iron tablet should be 18.0 mg and 65.0 mg, respectively. The first part of this experiment was the cereal extraction. 32 grams of Total cereal was weighed in a 600 mL beaker on a top loading balance. After the cereal was weighed, it was transferred into a plastic freezer bag and crushed into very small pieces. Then, 30 grams of the crushed cereal was weighed out in a clean 600 mL beaker on the top loading balance. 250 mL of DI water and a large Teflon magnet were then added to the crushed cereal. The 600 mL beaker containing the crushed cereal, DI water, and magnet was then placed on a stirring plate. The slurry was stirred for 15 minutes. The beaker was then removed from the stirring plate and the magnet was removed using tongs. The magnet which had iron and cereal particles on it was then rinsed with DI water to remove the cereal particles. The magnet was then placed into another 600 mL beaker with 50 mL of 1.0 M HNO3. The beaker with the HNO3 and the magnet was then warmed and swirled until no iron particles remained on the magnet. The magnet was then removed using tongs and rinsed with 2-3 mL of 1.0 M HNO3. This rinse was done over the 600 mL beaker containing the 1.0 M HNO3. The magnet was placed back into the cereal mixture and this same process was carried out 3 more times until there was no more iron present on the magnet. After the final extraction, pour the HNO3 solution into a 100 mL volumetric flask. Rinse the magnet three times with 10 mL of 1.0 M HNO3 and pour each rinse into the volumetric flask. After the three rinses, dilute the volumetric flask to the mark with 1.0 M HNO3. Using another 100 mL volumetric flask prepare 100 mL of a 0.10 M KSCN solution using 1.0 M HNO3 as the solvent. To prepare a 0.10 M KSCN solution, 0.97 g of KSCN was added to the 1.0 M HNO3.
