Society is becoming more connected to cell phones than ever. It’s true that cell phones make life easier. We are able to check our emails with it, receive phone calls, send text messages, hear music and take photos. However, cell phones and driving have become a massive issue that has redoubled these past years. This issue has been around since cell phones first came out. Everybody has their own point of view; however I believe that using cell phones while driving should not be allowed. My reasons for believing in this are that drivers are focusing too much on the screens of their cell phones instead of the road and phone usage can increase the time it takes for a driver to react. Of those injured in distraction-affected crashes, an estimated 2100 were injured in crashes because there was a cell phone involved at the time of the crashes. In fact, NHTSA shows statistics that the biggest groups of distracted drivers are between 15-19 years old. This was the age group that had the highest portion of distracted drivers identified as using cell phones. To illustrate my point, NHTSA reports that texting while driving kills eleven teens each day. Younger ones tend to be more attached to their cell phones because of Facebook, Instagram, etc. It seems these days teenager can’t live without knowing all of the gossip that is happening on their Facebook. Every time a friend of them posts something on their Facebook wall they will receive a notification on their phone, so no matter what they are doing they will just check it even if they are driving. It seems when they get a text message they can’t wait to open it like it’s some kind of emergency therefore, their attention goes all on reading the text and not on driving.
In addition, phone usage while driving has been proved to make your reaction slower. The University of Utah printed this study in the journal “Psychological Science” saying that they came to the conclusion that people who had conversations on a cell phone while driving had more chances crashing in to the person ahead of them, braking a lot slower and accelerating
