Discrimination
A study conducted by the Australian Department of Criminology, found that on average homeless people are 13 times more likely to experience violence and 47 times more likely to been victims of theft. In addition to physical violence, sexual assault is at an alarming rate. This study also showed that 1 in 10 homeless women have been victims of sexual assault in the past year alone.
Education
Homelessness makes it difficult to maintain school or further study and leaves people vulnerable to long-term unemployment. Unemployment in South Australia is at an all-time high, especially amongst homeless people. Evidence suggests that this is largely due to the amount of discrimination towards homeless people. Homeless individuals are often not given opportunities which only make it harder for them to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness. It is not surprising to discover that the main reason for homeless youths dropping out of school is due to the costs of education. Such as for books, clothes, social activities, many homeless people are forced to frequently move around, which can cause disruptions in schooling and difficulty making friends and connections.
