These are some of the most cutting edge and industry leading companies in the world, and they all have one thing in common: their South African-born leadership. Elon Musk is at this point a name known by people young and old across many disciplines, whether in business, investing, or engineering. His net worth is estimated at $11.4 billion as of October 31st, 2016, making him the 94th wealthiest person in the world (Forbes, Elon Musk). His companies also share the goal of revolutionizing how and where, mankind lives. Musk forms companies with the intent to solve a problem that he sees with the world. He does not see his companies as primarily a source of wealth for himself, but instead as a stepping stone to better the world. His company X.com merged with Paypal to build the Paypal conglomerate to provide access to online banking, surpassing borders, countries, and languages, allowing for businesses and individuals to trade online in ways not previously possible. SpaceX exists for the purpose of providing a means for humanity to colonize and live on Mars, and the company’s ultimate goal is to make life multiplanetary. Tesla exists to bring autonomous, electric, luxury vehicles to market in a fashion never seen before. Tesla is also the first successful American car startup since Ford Motor Company was founded in 1903.
