People are concerned about losing their jobs which affects their ability to stay motivated. Recall Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. Before the down fall of Cabela’s organization, people who were employed there were probably close, if not at the top-level of self-actualization need. However, as the workers future employment within the company began to waver, so did their standing on the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs. The fear of losing their job drops them down to the second level of safety needs. If they are out of a job, how will they be able to provide for their families or themselves? It is difficult right now for the managers to keep employees happy and still have morale for the company because they too are uncertain of the outcome

It will happen and of course can be expected that harsh feelings and negative behaviors will come from some employees. Of course they have a reason to be upset, their jobs and lifestyles are being threatened. However, those emotions must not get in the way of their work. No matter how they feel personally, they must come to work and act professionally to both higher officials and customers. Those acceptable behaviors must be clear to all employees. They must also know that there will be consequences to those who do not comply with the desired behavior. It must also be known to those who successfully comply with the set standards, their behavior will be rewarded by the means of a set up reward system. Some suggested rewards may be paid time off, larger merchandise discounts, or gifts.
Any company or person can be inspired to achieve a goal. It happens every day, especially so around the start of the New Year. However, being inspired alone is not enough to actually make the goal a reality. Motivation needs to be added to the equation. Having open communications between all managers and employees is key for effective motivation. When employees feel that they are valued enough to be updated on current issues and problems, they feel more confident about their stance in the company. Also when employees are allowed to share their thoughts and ideas and have a say in the direction the company is going, they feel valued and motivated by that added value to succeed. As just mentioned, positive reinforcement/rewards are excellent ways to manage motivation and practice communication at the same time. Employees are motivated by success when that success results in a reward for them.
