The Goal-Plan-Action Theory

It is evident that people use communication as a tool of changing the behavior and attitudes of others to what they desire. One can communicate in a way to indicate they are seeking for pity or in a rude manner. The Goals-Plan-Action theory was formed to describe the process that people use to form messages. The goal tries to shed some light on the process of producing messages and the impact it has.

This theory is structured as a process involving three components namely goals, plans and action
1. Goals
Goals are the first component in the process. They are defined as future states that one wants to attain. Goals are of two types; the primary and the secondary goals.

According to (Dillard, 4), people find ways to convince others for a variety of reasons. In trying to communicate a message, individuals express what they are interested in. Because the dynamics of behavior influence are so diverse, the Goal-Plan-Action theory explains a simple acceptable idea about communication which involves three components. The first component is the goals which were defined as future states of affairs that one seeks to achieve in future. The goals motivate the plans. Plans are acceptable behavior that is needed to achieve goals.
In summary, the Goal-Plan-Action theory is of the idea that goals motivate us to communicate. Therefore, what one wants to achieve encourages them to speak. The theory is still very relevant and applicable today. It can be used in many scenarios including counselling, negotiation among others. an example of its use is during negotiation when purchasing a product. A woman wants to buy a dress for a wedding ceremony. Upon asking for the price of the dress they want to purchase, she realizes that it expensive than she can afford. The goal here is to buy the dress. Because they want the dress at any cost, that will push the woman to bargain for the price of the dress. It is evident that the goal is motivating the plan.
