After completing the “Burnout Self-Test” quiz, I realized I need to pay attention to my burnout level (Mind Tools Ltd, 1996-2016). I received a score of twenty seven which means I show little signs of burnout. Being at the higher end of the range and six points away from “Be Careful” stage of burnout, I need to pay closer attention to the causes of burnout. We will discuss the symptoms of burnout, the steps I plan to take to ensure your stress does not negatively affect my ability to be a productive and effective employee and how this knowledge can be used to manage other employees.
According to Lisa Gerry, burnout is an extended period of time where someone experiences exhaustion and a lack of interest in things, resulting in a decline in their job performance. There are thirteen symptoms of burnout. They are
• Having a negative and critical attitude at work
• Dreading going into work and wanting to leave once you there
• Having low energy and little interest at work
• Having trouble sleeping
• Being absent form work a lot
• Feeling of emptiness
• Experiencing physical complaints such as headaches, illness, or backache
• Being irritated easily by team member or clients
• Having thoughts that your work doesn’t have meaning or make a difference
• Pulling away emotionally from your colleagues
• Feeling that your work and contributions goes unrecognized
• Blaming other for your mistakes
• Thinking of quitting work or changing roles (Mind Tools Ltd, 1996-2016)
