Rather than a ‘one strike and you’re out’ system, we should allow probation and parole officers to essentially use their discretion when determining these individuals fates, all the while taking into consideration the circumstances of the case. Many turn to crime because they cant supply for themselves or their children, and a probation or parole officer should be allowed to see this, rather than practicing an automated system that sends you right back to prison following any offense. Those who suffer from a drug problem, should be offered assistance with it through the probation or parole agency. Simple group talks such as AA sometimes aren’t enough, and they require more rigid assistance, which should be more widely available, or even going as far as to training the officers who enforce such in interpersonal training so they can handle somebody who is struggling with drug addiction. There should also be availability of job or educational opportunity or assistance through the probation/parole department, keeping in mind that many turn to crime because they have to, not because they want
