In “Bullet in the Brain” (1995), Tobias Wolff summarizes a whole life of Anders. The main character whose named Anders is a book critic, and the cause of his death is because his sarcastic comments. At the beginning of the reading is about the story in the bank, two robbers shows up and use guns to threat everyone. However, the character Anders seems cannot realize he is in danger and keep making sarcastic comments to the robbers. Then, the robbers shot him. After the bullet into Anders brain,the reading is about Anders’ memories, what he does not remember and what he remember. Finally, the story ends with a lovely moment of Anders’ childhood. The author Tobias Wolff clearly describes the event in the bank and states who Anders really is. The story of Anders’ life is important, it can tell us the reason of Anders’ death. The different ways that Wolff depicts the attitude of Anders greatly influences the tone of the essay. …show more content…
The following passage is clearly to define Anders’ personality, “‘Damned, unfair,’ he said. ‘Tragic, really. If they are not chopping off the wrong leg, or bombing your ancestral village, they are closing their position’” (Wolff 200). In the opening of the passage, Wolff’s purpose is to define that Anders is a rude person who mad at the woman who is in front of him. In addition, Anders interrupts the woman who is talking to the bankers. If anyone hear what Anders say about them, they do not feel well. he is rude and being sarcastic. In Wolff’s talking, Anders is always criticize other people, and it seems that he only can use sarcastic comments in his talking. I think Wolff might want to describe the personality of Anders by using negative tone. This passage is important because Wolff’s ton is full of anger and negative to write this passage. In addition, by changing voice tone, Wolff can guides reader that Anders is not a kind
