It is important for a client to sense the feeling of security, trust and comfort with a counselor. The first step for me as a counselor is identifying Sally’s needs and issues that are or may be causing difficulties in her life. To make Sally open up and talk about her concerns she needs to feel comfortable, understood and secure, to make her feel this way we need to develop rapport by using the SOLER technique, by being empathetic, by using active skills for example listening and eye contact. Approaching Sally by being supportive, open body language and by not being judgmental. Once rapport is establish in the relationship, Sally and I can begin to work more effectively. The miracle question requires considerable skill. As a counselor you can show your client a bright future but if performed incorrectly you can also show a very dark and hidden moments in life. As a counselor I should ask Sally the question correctly, maybe quietly or peacefully, this will give Sally the time to fully absorb the question and manage the answer.
Another way of involving Sally into the solution of her goals is to make her write a diary with the times and dates when she becomes upset or angry or even happy to establish what the triggers of her emotional ups and downs may be.
