In reality brain dead patients should not be kept on life support, although it seems like they are alive and functioning without the brain, it is not improving them and they shouldn’t be kept on life support.
Therefore within opinion, one believes that they should not be kept on life support, when they’re brain dead. First of all, what does brain-dead even mean, as it is defined “complete cessation of brain function as evidenced by absence of brain-wave activity on an electroencephalogram: sometimes used as a legal definition of death” (Brain 1). So, if it is used as a legal definition, why do people keep them on life support? Well, people are put on life support to keep the heart beating, because it does not need the brain to keep beating, only oxygen. Therefore they are put on life support to feed them and breathe for them because without life support or a brain the lungs cannot operate. Some people believe as long as the heart is beating, they’re still alive. However without brain activity, they will never wake up and be on life support forever, or until their heart gives out.
