1. In the documentary "Bra Boys" the Abberton brothers, Sunny, Koby and Jai were the main leaders of the brotherhood. Sunny in particular, was the leader of the brotherhood and was the filmmaker of the documentary. The "Bra Boys" were portrayed as misunderstood heroes, who are both the protagonist and the antagonist. Abberton wanted to express to the audience that they helped the community and did good things for them. They were portrayed as the protagonist by the surfing community as they looked up to the Abberton brothers. To the broader community they were presented as the antagonist, this is because the community believed that they were a risk to the society as they were involved in crimes, murders and they were seen in the newspaper for …show more content…
The technical language used in "Bra Boys" is the 'surfing lingo'. They used words such as "hectic" to describe the speed and danger of certain waves.
The social language used in the documentary indicates the importance of family is how the Abberton brothers call their grandma 'Ma', she took care of the brothers because their mum was a heroin addict and their step dad was a bank robber. The "Bra Boys" also called her 'Ma' as a symbolic of her position as a grandmother. This is because she treated these boys as part as her family. A major value promoted in the film is family. 'Ma' is an example of language that indicates the Bra boys are family. "Blood is thicker than water" indicates that the "Bra Boys" are family, implying that family is strong and nothing can tear them …show more content…
They were chosen to be part of the brotherhood by the eldest brother Sunny Abberton. Abberton decided who got the tattoo 'MY BROTHERS KEEPER', or the symbol of their handshake they greet each other with. In the documentary the Abberton brothers state that they chose that handshake as it is the strongest grasp you can have. This indicates that they will always support each other and respect the values of the group. Following the values meant that if there was trouble, you were on call ready to support the brothers.
