It was the first black regiment for the American Civil War. During the Civil War, President Lincoln argued that the Union forces were not fighting to end slavery but to prevent the disintegration of the United States. Ending slavery was a reason for the war, and they argued that African American should be able to join the fight for their freedom. African Americans were not allowed to serve as soldiers in the Union Army until January 1,1863. The Regiment was made up of African American soldiers from escaped slaves, and freemen. For example, when the men decided to relax and hangout the General decided to question and violate a solider Major Forbes convinced the General that he was being to harsh on them. During the movie, Major Forbes argued with General Robert Gould Shaw about the training of the 54th regiment. Although General Robert put rules and regulations on his soldiers, he was still protecting there rights. For example, when the General heard his men needed new shoes and clothing, and couldn 't get any, he was willing to go to the supply distributer and get his men the equipment they needed for battle. General Robert showed great respect towards elderly soldiers like Rawlin. The General made him a Sergeant which is a position higher than the other white soldiers. There were people in the towns that welcomed the African Americans, by cheering as they passed. This proves that although we see discrimination within the movie, there are people who respect African Americans as one race and
