The author does a good job at portraying different family types and says “that a family is made up of the people who love you the most” (Skutch, 1995, p.28). In the book many types of families are included. For example there are families made up of a mom, a dad, children, grandparents, others that only one child, some that only one parent, that have two moms, that two dads, or that only have adults. Lesson: Read aloud the book Who’s in a Family? Ask interactive questions about the book- example: pg.4- What kind of animal families can you think of? Pg.6- Does anyone like to go camping with their family? Pg.14- Can anyone share a fun activity that they do with their grandparent(s)? pg.21- Who makes the dinner in your family? Afterwards have the students create family portrait. They can use markers, crayons, pencils, or colored pencils. Allow the students to draw their family however they see them. Encourage the students to add in details to their pictures. After students have created their family portrait, allow each student to share who is in their family and their favorite activity to do with their family. Have the students write 1-3 sentences explaining who is in their family and why they love them/enjoy being with them. Have the students attach their sentences onto the back or bottom of their family pictures. Allow the students to hang their family portrait up in class. At the end of the week students can take their family pictures
