Body Image Standards

The woman that talks about body image on Youtube says the standards for weight is a public health problem that can only be changed by our environment. The environment influences us in powerful ways, we see what is average in our environment and that average becomes the norm. Who is responsible for these agreements of what is beautiful and desirable: the media. The media is largely made up of advertisers wanting to sell their products. The book Fundamentals of Abnormal Psychology says that models were made thin to show off the lines of their clothing. These plastic models are then comparable to humans, we see what we think is fashionable and that's what we want. Of course, these standards aren't attainable, which breeds feelings of unhappiness and unworthiness. In response to these feelings, we buy more products to reduce wrinkle lines and create the appearance of a bigger bust. Companies than have clientele to the detriment of the well-being of people. What's going to change this while still allowing companies to profit? …show more content…
Maybe one day the idea of perfection will be to be authentic and confident in our individuality. What's the point in going through life always wanting to reach the impossible? If we alter our ideas of fashion and pop-culture from conformism to expressionism, I think people as a whole would be much more joyful and confident in themselves and their lives. Authenticity makes us look at ourselves and what's right for our lives, what fits and what doesn't. It allows us to explore and learn, to adopt a curious attitude, and to grow. If we strive for authenticity in every part of our lives and being, the unhealthy, negative things that influence us will naturally fall away. Under this perspective, there is no need to change advertisement; it will just no longer have sway over our ideals rendering it
