I. In a CBS article, Bob Simon tells the unfortunate stories of many male athletes.
A. He explains that “on college varsity teams, there are now five times as many women as there were in 1972” (Simon, Bob).
1. Why is this the case? A law was passed in 1972 called Title IX that stated that any school that receives federal funds cannot discriminate in any area based on gender.
2. This seems like a good thing, so what’s the problem? As 60 Minutes first reported a few months prior to this article, “some male athletes on college campuses say they’re losing out to women by the way Title IX is being enforced” (Simon, Bob).
B. A group of college coaches filed a lawsuit against the government, claiming this said discrimination against …show more content…
Simon refers to the female athletes as “the daughters of the Title IX revolution: young women who are running and swimming their way through college, often with the help of athletic scholarships.”
2. He explains that “like generations of male athletes before them, many [females] have turned pro, like the members of the U.S. women's soccer team, which won the World Cup in 1999.”
C. While women have been making giant strides, hundreds of men's teams have been eliminated – and the men say that trails back to Title IX.
1. According to Simon, the government told the schools that the only surefire way to abide by Title IX was to achieve what's called proportionality.
a. That means that if half the student body is female, half the athletes should be as well.
b. So if a college has too many male athletes, it can do one of two things…
1) It can either add more women's teams – which often require a lot of money.
2) Or cut back on the number of …show more content…
They follow the ideology that “both men and women should receive equal treatment and not be discriminated against based on their gender” (Babylon).
B. For someone to victimize an individual because of his/her gender is going in contradiction to gender equity.
1. This can easily be illustrated through the example of when women were not able to vote.
2. But, it can also be shown through when participation in the Ancient Olympic Games was limited to male athletes only (Wood, Robert J.).
C. Since each individual is given this inherent right, it is wrong to rob someone of it regardless of their sex or regardless of the situation.
II. So if gender equity is really to be considered a “right”, then shouldn’t it also include the right for men to be able to participate in college sports? Why should men’s sports be removed because there aren’t females to take an equivalent spot? Equal numbers don’t necessarily mean equality.
A. A right is something that people are allowed the option of exercising.
1. For example, the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution prohibits any US citizen from being denied the right to vote on the basis of sex.
2. A right just allows us the ability to perform something without penalty, it is not something that we are forced to exercise or obligated to
